Sony has unveiled the next generation of its PlayStation 5 audio lineup with two new devices: the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and the premium Pulse Edge Wireless Headset.
Both models build on technology introduced with the Pulse Elite in 2024, including planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link connectivity, but Sony is now separating its headset lineup into two distinct tiers.
The standard PlayStation Pulse is scheduled to launch in select markets during the 2026 holiday season, while the Pulse Edge will follow in early 2027. Sony has not yet announced pricing, exact release dates or preorder dates.
Planar Magnetic Drivers Take Center Stage
Both new headsets feature custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers.
Sony says the larger drivers are designed to produce fuller, deeper bass while maintaining the clarity, sound separation and spatial accuracy associated with the Pulse Elite.
That spatial precision is particularly relevant in games where directional audio cues — such as footsteps or weapon reloads — can provide useful information to players.
On PS5, both headsets also support Tempest 3D AudioTech.
PlayStation Link and Simultaneous Bluetooth
Both models support PlayStation Link, Sony's wireless audio technology designed to deliver lossless, ultra-low-latency audio.
A USB-C PlayStation Link adapter is included with both headsets.
Compatible devices include PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC and Mac, while supported Bluetooth devices can remain connected simultaneously.
That allows players, for example, to continue receiving PS5 game audio through PlayStation Link while remaining connected to a smartphone over Bluetooth.
What Does the PlayStation Pulse Offer?
The standard PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset uses four magnets per planar driver.
It includes an integrated microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection, built-in volume controls and rotating earcups that allow the headset to fold flat for easier portability.
Sony will offer the headset in White and Midnight Black.
Battery life, pricing and the exact release date have not yet been announced.
Pulse Edge Adds the Premium Features
The Pulse Edge Wireless Headset takes the underlying concept considerably further.
Its planar magnetic drivers use eight magnets per driver, twice the number found in the standard Pulse. Sony says this allows the Edge to produce fuller and deeper bass while maintaining audio precision and clarity.
Pulse Edge also adds active noise cancellation, a detachable boom microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection, a hidden microphone for use when the boom is detached, PS5 game/chat balance controls, an audio/microphone jack and a carrying case.

When Do the New PS5 Headsets Launch?
The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is scheduled to launch in select markets during the 2026 holiday season.

That means the biggest unanswered question remains how aggressively Sony will price the two models against existing gaming headsets.

Sony's announcement shows that planar magnetic technology is becoming increasingly central to PlayStation's audio lineup.
The technology introduced with Pulse Elite is now being expanded across two new headsets, while Pulse Edge adds features associated with more premium gaming audio products — particularly ANC and additional physical controls.
Without hands-on testing or final pricing, it's too early to judge sound quality, comfort or value.
What is already clear is how Sony intends to position them: PlayStation Pulse provides the core next-generation Pulse experience, while Pulse Edge adds the premium feature set.
Their eventual prices will determine just how competitive that strategy becomes.
