AION 2 opens for free to everyone on Monday, October 5, and the first real decision comes before any flight or dungeon: which class to create. It looks like a simple pick on the character screen, but it shapes the next 50 hours. It decides how you fight, who you can play with and how long you wait to find a group.
The game reaches its global launch with eight classes, and the internet is already full of tier lists. The catch is that most were written by people who tested the Korean build or by sites that make money selling gold and boosting services. We are taking a different route: what each class does, who it suits, and what nobody can say with confidence yet.
The eight AION 2 classes in one minute
Based on what Steam, the specialist press and community guides have published, this is the global launch roster:
- Templar: the main tank. Holds enemy attention and protects the group, though it usually kills slowly solo.
- Gladiator: a durable melee fighter that mixes damage with crowd control. Easy rotation to learn, according to guides.
- Assassin: burst damage up close. Rewards good positioning and punishes mistakes.
- Ranger: physical ranged damage. Shoot and back away, a safe pick for newcomers.
- Sorcerer: a burst-damage caster with crowd control. Needs room to cast.
- Spiritmaster: summons creatures and combines sustained magic damage with good mobility.
- Cleric: the main healer. Always in demand when group content gets tough.
- Chanter: a hybrid support with buffs, off-healing and enough damage to cope solo.

If you plan to play solo at first
Most guides point to the same trio for players who want to learn the game without relying on anyone: Ranger, Sorcerer and Chanter. The Ranger lets you fight from range and make mistakes without paying for them. The Sorcerer deals high damage in exchange for standing still while casting. The Chanter is the odd one: it mixes buffs, off-healing and enough damage to cope solo, so it rarely runs out of things to do.
The Gladiator is part of that conversation too. One international guide even calls it the best class in the game, precisely because the skill rotation is simple and the crowd control helps against several enemies at once. We treat that as one author's opinion, not a fact: the global game is only days old.

If you want to get into groups quickly
In almost every MMORPG, healers and tanks find groups faster, and there is no reason AION 2 should differ. The game has more than 200 dungeons, from solo challenges to 10-player groups, according to its Steam page. In 5 and 10-player content, the Cleric and the Templar tend to be the most sought-after roles.
The price of that advantage is responsibility. Tanks and healers need to know encounter mechanics better than everyone else, and your mistakes show for the whole party. If you enjoy that role, great. If you just want to wander the world, pick something else.

If you like risk: the Assassin
The Assassin is for players who want to feel the combat. High damage, mobility and a high skill ceiling, but, according to guides, little room for positioning mistakes. In AION 2 that weighs even more, because vertical combat and flight keep changing where you need to be.
One caveat about ping: community guides say fast-combo classes like the Assassin and Gladiator suffer more from high latency. Since a South America server was confirmed, players in Brazil have an edge. The region list is in our launch coverage.
What nobody can say yet
Two unknowns are worth keeping in mind before you press create. The first is class changing: NC has not confirmed whether you will be able to change the class of an existing character in the global version. Treat your choice as permanent until that is clarified. The second is balance. Advance access started on September 30, but a serious tier list only appears after thousands of players reach the endgame, and NC has adjusted balance on the Korean version over time.

Before you create your character
Spend a few minutes in the editor. The game promises more than 200 customization options, and you will be looking at this character for a long time.
Decide your role in the group before the class. Ask yourself: do I want to heal, protect, deal damage or support?
If you are playing with friends, coordinate your classes. A group with one tank, one healer and three kinds of damage does more than five mages.
Pick the server with your friends before creating the character, because switching later may not be simple. Our preparation guide has a step-by-step.
Our take
This is our opinion. For anyone who has never played AION, the Ranger and the Chanter are the gentlest picks: they forgive mistakes, play well solo and stay useful in groups. If you want to be in demand, think Cleric or Templar. The Assassin and the Spiritmaster are for players already comfortable with action MMORPGs.
And if you are torn, remember the game is free. Making two characters to test the opening costs only time, and that time is worth more than following a tier list from people who have not seen the global endgame.
