How do you start World of Warcraft in 2026?
World of Warcraft can look intimidating from the outside.
The game launched in 2004 and now contains numerous expansions, hundreds of locations and an enormous amount of history.
But new players need to understand one thing:
you don't need to learn 20 years of WoW before playing WoW in 2026.
Blizzard's current new-player experience provides a much clearer path. Fresh accounts begin by learning the fundamentals in Exile's Reach before moving into Dragonflight.
Here's how to go from downloading WoW to reaching the modern game.
- Which version of World of Warcraft should you play?
There are several ways to experience WoW today.
For a completely new player interested in current expansions and future content, we recommend starting with:
modern World of Warcraft, commonly called Retail WoW.
That's where you'll find the current story, Mythic+, Delves, Housing and Midnight.
What about WoW Classic?
Classic recreates earlier eras of World of Warcraft.
It's excellent for players specifically interested in older MMORPG design, but playing Classic isn't required to understand modern WoW.
If you simply want to start World of Warcraft today, Retail is the most straightforward choice.

- Can you play World of Warcraft for free?
Yes.
WoW's Free Trial allows you to play up to level 20 and experience eligible quests and dungeons without immediately purchasing the current expansion.
Use it.
Find out whether you enjoy the combat, world and your chosen class before spending money.
After level 20, continuing progression requires a WoW Subscription or Game Time.
- How to install World of Warcraft
The basic process is:
- Create a Battle.net account.
- Download the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac.
- Find World of Warcraft.
- Install the game.
- Select modern World of Warcraft.
- Create your first character.
That's also the basic path provided by Blizzard's official starter guide.
- Horde or Alliance?
Don't overthink this on your first character.
Alliance and Horde remain important parts of Warcraft's identity, but modern WoW provides considerably more cross-faction interaction than the game historically allowed.
Choose the race and fantasy you actually like.
You're much more likely to keep playing a character you think is cool than one selected because a guide told you it was optimal.
- Which class should a beginner choose?
Don't choose purely from a tier list.
Balance changes.
Your character may stay with you for years.
Think about what sounds fun.
Want melee combat? Consider classes such as Warrior, Paladin, Rogue or Demon Hunter.
Want ranged magic? Mage, Warlock, Priest and Shaman provide several options.
Want pets and a bow? Hunter is an approachable choice.
Want exceptional flexibility? Druid can fill multiple roles.
For a first character, Hunter is one of the easiest recommendations, particularly for comfortable questing.
But the best beginner class is ultimately the one that makes you want to keep playing.
- Tank, healer or DPS?
WoW's group gameplay revolves around three roles.
Tank: controls enemies and protects the group.
Healer: keeps players alive.
DPS: primarily deals damage while handling encounter mechanics.
For a completely new player, DPS is generally the easiest starting point.
You can always explore tanking and healing later.
- Which realm should you choose?
World of Warcraft calls its servers realms.
Normal realms are suitable for most players, while RP realms cater to role-playing communities.
Open-world PvP is optional through War Mode rather than automatically defining normal realms.
If you have friends playing WoW, joining their community is usually more valuable than trying to find a theoretically perfect realm.
- Start with Exile's Reach
Fresh accounts begin with Exile's Reach.
It teaches fundamentals such as movement, combat, class abilities, NPC interaction, quests and inventory management.
Take your time.
Read your abilities as you receive them.
Understanding five abilities is more useful to a beginner than copying an endgame rotation containing twenty buttons you haven't learned yet.
- Where do you go after Exile's Reach?
This is where many older guides are outdated.
Fresh accounts are now directed into Dragonflight after completing Exile's Reach.
The current leveling experience allows newcomers to follow Dragonflight's story toward level 70 while preparing them for the beginning of the Worldsoul Saga.
You do not need to complete every expansion in chronological order first.

- What about The War Within?
The War Within begins the Worldsoul Saga.
Midnight continues it as the second chapter.
Blizzard's updated leveling experience is specifically intended to provide newcomers with a clearer transition toward this modern storyline.
- When do you reach Midnight?
Midnight is WoW's current expansion in 2026 and raises the maximum level to 90.
Don't rush to it purely because other players are already at endgame.
Leveling teaches you your class one ability at a time.
Use that opportunity.
- Do you need to complete every quest?
No.
Follow the main campaign and complete side quests when they interest you.
Don't turn your first WoW character into a checklist.
Explore.
- When should you start dungeons?
You can begin experiencing dungeons while leveling.
Follower Dungeons make this considerably easier for new players by allowing NPC companions to help fill a group in supported content.
They're useful for learning your role and basic dungeon mechanics without immediately worrying about experienced strangers rushing through everything.
- Do beginners need addons?
No.
Start with the default interface.
Midnight itself expanded Blizzard's built-in UI tools, including nameplate improvements, integrated damage meters and encounter alerts.
Add addons later when you understand what specific problem you want them to solve.
- What are professions?
Professions cover crafting and gathering activities such as Mining, Herbalism, Blacksmithing, Alchemy and Enchanting.
They're useful, but you don't need to master them on day one.
Focus on learning your character first.
- What is transmog?
Transmogrification allows you to customize how your equipment looks using appearances you've collected.
For many players, collecting old armor and weapon appearances becomes a major long-term activity.
Not everything valuable in WoW increases your item level.
- What are mounts?
Mounts let you travel around Azeroth and are also a massive collecting activity.
They can come from quests, bosses, achievements, reputations, events and many other sources.
Don't be surprised if collecting them eventually becomes one of your main reasons to log in.
- What are Delves?
Delves are smaller adventures that provide another progression path and can accommodate solo players as well as groups.
They're particularly useful for players who want meaningful character progression without constantly depending on a permanent group.

- What do you do at max level?
That's when WoW opens up considerably.
You can pursue:
Open-world content for casual progression.
Delves for solo and small-group adventures.
Dungeons for traditional group PvE.
Mythic+ for increasingly difficult dungeons.
Raids for large boss encounters.
PvP against other players.
Housing for customization.
Mounts and transmog for collecting.
There isn't one correct way to play World of Warcraft.
- Do you need a guild?
No.
But finding a good one can make WoW considerably more enjoyable.
Guilds can provide people for dungeons, raids, professions, questions and social activities.
Find a community matching your goals rather than accepting the first random invitation.
- Ten mistakes new WoW players should avoid
- Choosing a class entirely from tier lists.
- Trying to understand every expansion before starting.
- Buying everything before trying the Free Trial.
- Installing dozens of addons immediately.
- Racing to max level.
- Copying builds without reading abilities.
- Being afraid of dungeons.
- Assuming every quest must be completed.
- Comparing yourself with veteran players.
- Turning WoW into a job before deciding whether you enjoy it.
Your first character doesn't need to be perfect.
It needs to be fun.
- What's the simplest path for a new WoW player?
Reduced to one line:
Battle.net → Free Trial → Retail WoW → Exile's Reach → Dragonflight → Worldsoul Saga → Midnight → choose your endgame.
Don't worry about parses, logs, Best in Slot gear or the Mythic+ meta on your first day.
Discover Azeroth first.
Is 2026 a good time to start WoW?
For MMORPG fans, yes.
The new-player experience is more structured, solo-friendly options exist, the Free Trial lets you experiment before paying and Blizzard has created a clearer route toward modern content.
World of Warcraft is enormous.
You just don't need to experience all of it at once.
Create a character.
Learn your first abilities.
Complete your first quests.
Enter your first dungeon.
Then decide where you want your adventure to go.
