Bungie has revealed one of Marathon's biggest changes in direction since launch. The studio outlined a new plan to expand the game beyond its extraction-focused PvEvP structure, including a permanent PvE experience, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode and a much larger evolution planned for March 2027.

The roadmap begins with a Nightfall Refresh in October, expands significantly with Symbiosis in December and culminates in March, when Bungie plans to connect permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences into a broader survival ecosystem.

Marathon is growing beyond extraction

Bungie says it wants to preserve the PvEvP tension that has defined Marathon while ensuring it is no longer the only way players can experience the game.

According to the studio, some players want quick, lower-pressure sessions, while others are looking for direct competition, cooperation, difficult challenges or longer nights with their crews. Marathon's new direction is intended to support those different playstyles inside the same world.

The future vision includes connected PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, different levels of intensity and commitment, options for solo players and crews and more approachable ways to learn the game.

Permanent PvE arrives in December

Symbiosis arrives in December and introduces Marathon's first permanent PvE experience.

Symbiosis, planned for December 2026, will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE experience.

Bungie says players have been asking for a place where they can explore, experiment with builds and take on challenges without constantly worrying about being hunted by other Runners.

The studio is still finalizing parts of the experience and plans to provide a deeper look before Symbiosis launches.

The permanent nature of the mode is important. Bungie is not describing this as a temporary experiment, but as the first dedicated permanent PvE experience for Marathon.

Marathon is also getting experimental Team Deathmatch

Symbiosis will not focus exclusively on PvE. The update will also introduce an experimental Team Deathmatch mode.

It is designed as a more direct and lower-commitment way to compete, sharpen skills and fight other players without putting an entire run at risk.

Bungie plans to monitor how players engage with the experiment and use what it learns to help shape Marathon's competitive future.

Perimeter is expanding with a major new threat

Another major component of Symbiosis is a visual and structural overhaul of Perimeter.

A new fungal ecosystem will spread across the landscape, transforming familiar locations and opening new routes. Bungie is also adding new points of interest and high-level challenges.

One of those challenges will feature the Tick Queen, which Bungie describes as Marathon's largest combatant yet.

Bishop is Marathon's new Shell

December will also introduce Bishop, a new Shell archetype Bungie describes as a high-performance robot samurai.

Bishop is designed as a fast, surgical hunter-killer built around speed, surprise and devastating bursts of melee damage.

The expansion of Marathon's Shell roster is part of a broader progression change. Bungie wants players to have more agency over each Shell's capabilities, progression and specialized role within their arsenal.

Bungie says Marathon needs a better experience for new players

One of the most important changes has nothing to do with a new mode. Bungie acknowledged that Marathon currently asks new players to learn too much, too quickly.

Symbiosis will begin improving onboarding to create a smoother introduction to Marathon's systems and world.

A CyAc-sponsored social space with a built-in firing range is also coming, giving players somewhere to meet, prepare, test weapons and abilities and become comfortable with their Shell before entering activities.

Marathon's major evolution arrives in March 2027

Bungie describes the March update as meaningfully larger than Symbiosis.

Current plans include an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, new onboarding, a refactored Cradle, deeper Shell progression, more focused questlines and narrative, new alien combatants and an entirely new zone.

Tau Ceti IV is also expected to build stronger connections with Marathon's roots. Bungie confirmed that it wants to strengthen links between the current game and the original Marathon trilogy while introducing more alien enemies, including transformed versions of the Pfhor.

The new zone has not yet been revealed in detail. Bungie says only that it will take Runners deeper into the unknown.

Bungie is changing its update strategy

Bungie is also moving away from strict seasonal releases for Marathon.

Instead of forcing major updates into a fixed calendar, the studio says future release timing will be based on what it is building, the size of the work and what the team can responsibly support.

The first step is the Nightfall Refresh in early October, a focused update targeting progression, rewards and the current live experience while development continues on the larger December and March additions.

Why is Marathon changing?

One week before publishing the detailed roadmap, Bungie's new leadership acknowledged that Marathon did not reach as many players as the studio had hoped.

Bungie said it wants to preserve what makes Marathon distinct while evolving the game beyond the genre constraints originally placed on it.

The new strategy is to expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience that can support players interested in cooperative PvE, competitive PvP or the unpredictable tension of PvEvP.

Marathon's future begins with three steps

The roadmap establishes a clear sequence: Nightfall Refresh in October, Symbiosis in December and a much larger evolution in March 2027.

The fundamental change is that PvEvP will remain important to Marathon, but it will no longer define the entire experience on its own. If Bungie delivers the roadmap as described, Marathon will become a connected collection of survival experiences offering different ways to explore and confront the dangers of Tau Ceti IV.
