Minecraft is getting its first new dimension in over 14 years: The Sift arrives in 2027

Minecraft is preparing for one of the biggest expansions to its world in more than a decade. During Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, Mojang Studios confirmed that The Sift will be added to Minecraft in 2027.

The announcement is especially significant because The Sift will be the first new dimension added to Minecraft in more than 14 years. The game's universe, traditionally divided between the Overworld, Nether and The End, is finally getting another official territory to explore.

The new dimension is coming to both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Mojang has not yet announced a specific release date within 2027.

What is The Sift?

The Sift did not make its first appearance at the September event. The dimension had previously been introduced as one of the major additions to Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches on September 29, 2026.

In Dungeons II, strange events begin disrupting the natural order of the Overworld. New enemy types appear, souls begin moving through the world and mysterious rifts lead the heroes into The Sift.

Mojang previously described the dimension as both strange and beautiful, featuring new landscapes and mysterious threats. Minecraft Dungeons II will therefore give players their first opportunity to explore this new territory.

The major Minecraft Live surprise was the confirmation that The Sift will not remain exclusive to the spin-off.

The Sift is coming to the main Minecraft game

Mojang confirmed that The Sift will become part of Minecraft in 2027. According to the announcement, the new dimension will give players an entirely new environment to explore, survive and create within.

The studio also briefly showed an in-development version of the dimension running inside Minecraft.

That transition is particularly interesting because Dungeons II can serve as an early preview of what may eventually appear in the sandbox. Mojang indicated that mobs, blocks and biomes found in the action RPG could give players a taste of The Sift.

That does not mean everything in Dungeons II will be transferred directly into Minecraft. Mojang has not yet detailed which elements will remain, change or be created specifically for Java and Bedrock.

How do you enter The Sift?

That is one of the biggest unanswered questions.

Mojang has not officially revealed how players will access The Sift in Minecraft. We also do not know whether reaching it will require specific resources, progression or how the mysterious rifts featured in Dungeons II will translate to the sandbox game.

For now, any specific access method would be speculation.

The developer says more information about The Sift will be revealed at future Minecraft Live events.

Will The Sift have new mobs, blocks and biomes?

Minecraft Dungeons II already provides an early look at the dimension's identity, including its own environments and new threats.

Mojang has also pointed to the mobs, blocks and biomes in Dungeons II as elements that can give players an idea of what The Sift has to offer.

However, the final content list for the Minecraft version has not been announced. That includes new blocks, creatures, structures, resources, items and potential dimension-specific mechanics.

The distinction matters: we know the dimension is coming to Minecraft, but we do not yet know exactly how much of the Dungeons II interpretation will be carried over.

Why is a new Minecraft dimension such a big deal?

Minecraft regularly receives new blocks, creatures, biomes and systems, but an entire dimension represents a much larger expansion of the game's structure.

The Nether has evolved significantly over the years, while The End continues to play a central role in traditional Survival progression. Even so, Minecraft's core set of dimensions has remained essentially established since version 1.0.

The End arrived with Minecraft's full release in November 2011. No new dimension has been added to the main game since.

The Sift breaks that streak more than 14 years later.

Beyond providing another place to explore, a dimension can create room for its own ecosystems, progression, building opportunities, resources and challenges. The true scale of the change will depend on what Mojang implements before release.

When will The Sift release in Minecraft?

The official release window is 2027.

Mojang has not announced a month, day or specific game drop for the dimension. Any more precise release date should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

The studio has also indicated that future Minecraft Live events will reveal more information about The Sift and when players can explore it.

Before then, Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026, providing the first playable version of the dimension.

Is The Sift coming to Java and Bedrock?

Yes. The official announcement covers both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

That places the new dimension within Minecraft's core experience across PC, consoles and devices supported by those editions, although implementation details may still be revealed closer to release.

What we still don't know

Despite the scale of the announcement, Mojang has only revealed part of the project.

We still do not know the exact release date, how players will access The Sift, which mobs it will contain, which blocks can be found there, how many biomes it will have, which structures will generate or how the dimension will fit into traditional Survival progression.

It is also not confirmed how closely Minecraft's version will match the dimension found in Minecraft Dungeons II.

Those unanswered questions are likely to keep The Sift at the center of Minecraft discussions throughout 2027. After more than a decade exploring the Overworld, Nether and The End, players finally know another major official destination is on the way.
