Overwatch Season 5 is live today, October 6, and it closes out the Reign of Talon year with a new vampire Support hero, Doctrine, a brand-new Escort map called Watchpoint: Grímsvötn and a Sombra rework that moves her from Damage to Support. Blizzard has also launched a Halloween event, an anime crossover with Solo Leveling and a Battle Pass system that brings back every pass from previous seasons.

For players, this is one of the busiest season launches of the year: a new hero, a role change for one of the game's most divisive characters and a map in a mode that has not received new content in a long time, all arriving on the same day.

Overwatch Season 5 new hero: Doctrine

According to Blizzard's official Season 5 announcement, Doctrine is a Support hero built around life-draining, vampire-themed abilities. His main weapon, the Eternal Scepter, can heal allies and damage enemies from mid-to-long range, so he is designed to stay behind the front line while still contributing pressure.

He can also deploy mechanical bat drones that boost his team's healing and attack speed, and an ability called Infuse empowers the rest of his kit. His Ultimate redistributes lifeforce across the battlefield: allies gain Overhealth while enemies have their maximum health limited, which makes it a strong tool for turning a team fight.

Doctrine was first revealed at BlizzCon in September, when Blizzard also ran a short hero trial. In the story, he shares a history with Doomfist, who returns to break him out of a Talon prison.

That prison is the setting for Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a new Escort map set inside a volcanic facility in Iceland. Blizzard describes it as the first new Escort map in years, which is notable for a mode that many players feel has been left behind by newer formats.

Like other Escort maps, Grímsvötn asks attackers to push a payload through a series of checkpoints while defenders try to stall them. Expect the first days of the season to be about learning sightlines and flank routes, especially with Doctrine's long-range healing in the mix.

Sombra becomes a Support and Roadhog gets reworked

The biggest balance news is Sombra's move from Damage to Support. Blizzard says she now has healing tools, including an ability called Hotfix, and a new Cyberspace ability, while her hacking capabilities are tied more closely to her Ultimate. For Sombra mains, this changes how the hero is played and which slot you queue for.

Roadhog is also changing. His Scrap Gun now fires in two bursts, and he gains a new ability, Trash Compactor, that absorbs incoming projectiles and returns damage based on what it catches. Coverage of the update notes that the changes target his long-criticized one-shot combo potential.

Halloween event, Solo Leveling crossover and Battle Pass

The seasonal Halloween event, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, runs from October 6 to November 2. Players respawn as random heroes with stacking random powers, and the community votes on which heroes are brought back each week, with 20 playable heroes available by the final week. Weekly event passes add themed rewards.

Two collaborations and limited events are scheduled as well:

Overwatch x Shadow Monarch, a crossover with the Solo Leveling anime, runs from October 6 to 26 with skins for Genji, Reaper, Anran, Reinhardt and Lifeweaver. The Tech Witches collection follows from October 9 to 26, and a competitive feature called Team Drives, which keeps winning teammates together, is set for October 29 to 31.

On the Battle Pass side, Season 5 introduces Unvaulted Passes, letting players work on passes from earlier seasons alongside the current one. Blizzard says the current pass includes up to 80 Mythic Prisms, and the season adds two new Mythics: Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang and Treblemaker, Lúcio's first Mythic weapon, which features a tiny dancing frog.

What Season 5 means for players

If you play Support, this is a big season. Doctrine adds a new long-range healer with damage potential, and Sombra joining the role changes the Support pool overnight. Damage players lose a flanker, which may shift team compositions in both Quick Play and Competitive while the meta settles.

Overwatch remains free to play on PC and consoles, so Season 5 is also a good entry point for lapsed players: the Halloween event and the returning passes give you plenty to do without a large time commitment.
