After years of community requests, Xbox finally has a dedicated reward for players who complete a game: Mythic Achievements.

Microsoft announced on September 29, 2026 that Xbox Insiders can now get an early look at the new system. A Mythic is awarded when a player completes all of the original achievements for an eligible game.

In practice, the idea occupies a similar space to the Platinum trophy in the PlayStation ecosystem, although Microsoft and Sony use their own systems and rules.

How do Mythic Achievements work?

Mythic recognizes players who have completed all eligible original achievements for a game.

The main rule is straightforward: to earn Mythic status, a player must complete all of the game's original achievements.

There is an important distinction for games that receive content after launch. According to Microsoft, achievements added later through DLC or updates are not required to earn Mythic.

Once earned, Mythic status is also permanent. That means a future expansion adding new achievements will not remove a Mythic reward the player has already received.

The change addresses a familiar problem for completionists: a game considered complete will not suddenly become incomplete simply because new achievements were added years later.

Older games can receive Mythic status too

One of the most interesting details of the announcement is its retroactive support.

Microsoft says Mythic Achievements have already been added to eligible games players completed in the past. That includes Xbox 360 titles.

As a result, some players may open their profiles and discover they already have Mythics from games they completed years ago.

This approach also turns the feature into a celebration of a player's history across the Xbox ecosystem rather than limiting Mythic status to future releases.

Xbox also gets a new Gaming tab

The new Gaming tab brings together achievements, Gamerscore milestones and games that have reached Mythic status.

Mythic Achievements are part of a broader change to how Xbox presents each player's gaming history.

Profiles now include a new Gaming tab where players can view achievements, track their next Gamerscore milestone badge and revisit completed games.

Games that have reached Mythic stand out in achievement history with a special frame, making a player's collection of completed titles easier to identify.

Players can also visit their friends' Gaming tabs to see what they have accomplished and which games they have taken to Mythic.

Xbox shows your progress toward Mythic

The system is also designed to make the path toward 100% completion easier to understand.

A new progress bar at the top of each game's achievement list shows how close the player is to Mythic status. There is also an option to focus specifically on the original achievements that still need to be unlocked.

Achievements added later are clearly tagged as add-on content, making it easier to understand what does and does not count toward Mythic.

Similar progress information appears elsewhere across Xbox, including Guide and achievement details.

Is Mythic the Xbox version of a Platinum trophy?

The comparison is unavoidable. On PlayStation, the Platinum trophy traditionally acts as a reward for completing the required trophy set for a game. Mythic now gives Xbox a dedicated visual reward for completing a game's original achievements.

The systems are not identical, however. Xbox continues to use Gamerscore and Achievements as its primary structure, while Mythic acts as an additional layer of recognition for completed games.

Calling Mythic the 'Xbox Platinum' is therefore a useful shorthand for explaining the concept, but the feature has its own rules and integration within the Xbox ecosystem.

When will Mythic Achievements be available to everyone?

For now, Microsoft describes Mythic Achievements as an early-look experience for Xbox Insider participants.

The official announcement does not provide a specific date for a general rollout to all Xbox players.

The Insider stage gives Microsoft an opportunity to collect feedback before features are expanded more broadly, so players outside the program will need to wait for further availability details.

A meaningful change for completionists

The impact of Mythic Achievements goes beyond adding another icon to an Xbox profile. Xbox is now giving more visible recognition to something its community has pursued for years: completing a game's core achievement challenges.

Retroactive support for eligible titles, including Xbox 360 games, makes the debut especially notable for players with a long history on the platform.

The next major question is when Mythic Achievements will move beyond Xbox Insider and reach the wider Xbox community.
