Is Monster Hunter Wilds worth it in 2026? Yes, for most players, especially at its new base price of $39.99. The rough PC launch is largely behind it, a big performance patch pushed Steam reviews back to Mostly Positive, all post-launch updates are free, and a 2027 expansion is confirmed. The main caveats are high PC requirements and an endgame that is still waiting for that expansion.
This guide explains what changed since launch, what Monster Hunter Wilds costs now, how it runs, which edition to buy and who should skip it, so you can decide with all the facts in one place.

What Monster Hunter Wilds is
Monster Hunter Wilds is Capcom's latest mainline Monster Hunter, released on February 28, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. You play as a hunter exploring the Forbidden Lands, a set of open regions where weather and seasons change and affect how monsters behave. The loop is simple to explain and hard to put down: track a monster, fight it with one of 14 weapon types, carve materials and craft better weapons and armor for the next hunt.
It is a co-op game at heart. You can play the whole campaign solo with NPC support hunters, but up to four players can team up online, and the PC version lists cross-platform multiplayer on Steam. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is set for December 4, 2026, with crossplay as well.
Is Monster Hunter Wilds worth it in 2026? What changed since launch
The short version: the game got cheaper and better. These are the changes that matter most.
Performance fixes on PC
At launch, the PC version was criticized for stutter, crashes and poor frame rates even on strong hardware, and its Steam rating collapsed. Capcom released a major PC performance patch in early 2026; GamesRadar+ reported in February that the lifetime Steam score had climbed back to 50% positive after it. As of October 2026, the Steam page shows Mostly Positive for recent reviews (72%) and for all English reviews (70%).
A permanent price cut
In August 2026, Capcom permanently lowered the base game price and simplified its editions. Verified in October 2026 on Steam, the base game costs $39.99 and the new Gold Edition costs $79.99. The old Deluxe, Premium Deluxe and Cosmetic DLC Pass bundles were discontinued.
A confirmed expansion
Capcom announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance at Summer Game Fest 2026 as a paid expansion for 2027, in the tradition of World's Iceborne and Rise's Sunbreak. According to Capcom's official announcement, it adds new quest ranks, locales, monsters and expanded weapon actions.

Monster Hunter Wilds PC requirements and how it runs
Even after the fixes, Wilds is demanding on PC. These are the official Steam requirements, verified in October 2026:
Minimum: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), Intel Core i5-10400 or Core i3-12100 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, GeForce GTX 1660 (6 GB) or Radeon RX 5500 XT (8 GB) and 75 GB on an SSD. Capcom's target here is 1080p upscaled from 720p at 30fps on the Lowest preset.
Recommended: the same CPUs, 16 GB of RAM, GeForce RTX 2060 Super or Radeon RX 6600 (8 GB of VRAM) and 75 GB on an SSD, for 1080p at 60fps with Frame Generation on the Medium preset.
Note that the recommended target already relies on frame generation. If your PC sits near the minimum, try the free demo first. Not sure where your hardware stands? Our guide on how to know if your PC can run a game walks you through it.
On consoles the experience is more predictable, and on Switch 2 Capcom has published 30fps targets in handheld and TV modes.
Which edition should you buy?
Standard Edition ($39.99 on Steam): the right choice for almost everyone. All gameplay updates released so far are free.
Gold Edition ($79.99 on Steam): adds the Cosmetic DLC Collection. It is only worth it if you care about layered armor, pendants and other cosmetics; it adds no monsters or story.
Ascendance is a separate paid expansion, so neither edition includes it.

Who should play Monster Hunter Wilds and who should skip it
Play it if you enjoy learning a weapon in depth, like boss fights that reward patience, or want a co-op game to share with friends for dozens of hours. It is also one of the more approachable entries in the series, and the Steam version has full Brazilian Portuguese audio, interface and subtitles.
Wait or skip if your PC is below the minimum requirements, you dislike grinding for gear, or you mainly want a large endgame right now. Ascendance is the content expansion that traditionally makes a Monster Hunter game complete, and it is not out until 2027.
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying before testing on a weak PC. The free Prologue Demo on PS5, Xbox, Steam and Switch 2 lets you test performance, and your save carries over.
Paying for the Gold Edition expecting new content. It is cosmetics only.
Ignoring storage. You need 75 GB of SSD space on PC, and the Switch 2 download is an estimated 39.1 GB.
