World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026, offering a new journey through an Azeroth that is familiar but significantly reimagined. For players planning to start on day one, several decisions made before character creation can have a meaningful impact on the opening experience.
Forever is designed as a new permanent home for World of Warcraft alongside modern WoW and Classic. Its adventure takes place after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, with progression to level 60 and new systems that change how players approach the journey.
This guide covers 10 things worth understanding before launch so you can avoid rushed decisions and get more out of your first days in Azeroth.
1. Choose your ruleset before worrying about your character

One of Forever's biggest changes happens before character creation. Instead of the traditional realm-selection screen, players first choose the kind of experience they want.
The main launch options include Normal, PvP and Roleplaying. Normal focuses on exploration, questing and cooperation with optional PvP. PvP adds the persistent danger of open-world conflict in contested areas. Roleplaying is designed for players who want deeper immersion and communities built around roleplay.
Hardcore is also planned, but Blizzard has confirmed that it will become available sometime after launch.
This decision matters because rulesets are separate ecosystems. Characters in different rulesets cannot simply group together for dungeons and raids. If you plan to play regularly with friends, everyone should agree on the same ruleset before creating characters.
2. Coordinate your faction and ruleset with friends
Forever preserves the traditional separation between Horde and Alliance. Players from the two factions cannot group together.
That means a group of friends needs to coordinate two important decisions: faction and ruleset. Discovering several hours later that your friends selected a different ecosystem could mean creating another character.
If you plan to play as a group at launch, settle these choices before November 4.
3. Do not choose your class only for level 60
Forever is designed to make the leveling journey matter, and its new Legacy System reinforces that philosophy.
Instead of treating your first character purely as a race to max level, consider a class whose gameplay you actually want to experience across quests, dungeons, PvP and world activities.
The Legacy System also rewards progression across different classes, so experimenting with additional characters can become part of the game's long-term structure. Blizzard has made clear, however, that alts are not required to benefit from Legacy: every character advantage can be unlocked while playing a single character.
4. Understand the Legacy System from day one

The Legacy System is one of WoW Forever's defining additions. It provides account-wide horizontal progression that rewards different ways of playing rather than focusing exclusively on power or gear.
There are 65 Legacy Challenges spread across Classes, Tradeskills, Player vs. Player, Adventure, Dungeons and Raids. Completing a challenge awards one Legacy Point.
For most players, access will begin when their first character reaches level 25. It is also possible to earn a first point by reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary tradeskill or by exploring the entire world map.
Legacy Points are account-wide across non-Hardcore characters. Each character can spend those shared points independently on perks covering Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness.
At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points.
5. Do not ignore tradeskills
Tradeskills are not merely a side activity in Forever. They contribute directly to Legacy progression.
Legacy Challenges tied to tradeskills award points for reaching milestones in non-gathering primary professions. Blizzard lists skill levels 150, 225 and 300 among those progression goals.
Choosing a profession that supports your goals early can therefore contribute both to your economy and your horizontal progression.
There is no universally best profession. The right choice depends on what you want to accomplish with your character and account.
6. Explore Azeroth instead of only rushing between quests
Forever puts the world back at the center of the experience, and exploration is more than an optional activity for completionists.
Exploring the entire world map on the same character awards a Legacy Challenge. Blizzard is also expanding, reimagining and adding areas across Azeroth, making exploration an important part of Forever's design.
Players who normally follow only the fastest leveling route have an additional reason to leave the main path.
7. Prepare for dungeons while leveling
The Legacy System also rewards players for completing groups of dungeons throughout the leveling journey.
There are challenges tied to defeating the final bosses of all dungeons in the level 15-25, 26-45 and 46-60 ranges.
That creates an incentive to experience dungeons as you level instead of leaving all group content until max level.
If you are playing with friends, consider building a group with complementary roles and tackling these activities as they naturally become available.
8. If you want to play Skyborne, check your access before launch
The new Skyborne race is part of Forever and begins its journey on Zephras Isle, a dedicated level 1-12 starting experience.
Blizzard states that access to the Skyborne race or the Zephras Isle starting experience requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition.
Players specifically planning to start as Skyborne should therefore verify their edition before launch instead of discovering the restriction during character creation.
9. Reserve your name if your edition allows it

Blizzard has scheduled Early Name Reservation for eligible accounts from October 27 through November 3, 2026.
Names are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and Blizzard does not guarantee that a desired name will remain available.
For players who already know their main character and own an edition that provides the benefit, reserving a name before November 4 removes one small concern when the game opens.
10. Approach Forever as a journey, not just an endgame race
Perhaps the biggest mindset change is this: Forever has been built to make the journey matter again.
The initial level cap is 60, but Legacy rewards progression across classes, tradeskills, exploration, PvP, dungeons and raids. Blizzard also plans to introduce additional Legacy Challenges, Perks and Rewards with future content releases.
That means optimizing exclusively for the fastest possible route to level 60 could cause you to overlook some of the systems that distinguish Forever from other versions of World of Warcraft.
WoW Forever launch checklist
Before November 4, choose your ruleset, coordinate faction and ruleset with friends, pick a class you genuinely want to play, consider your tradeskills and decide whether you plan to start as Skyborne.
If your edition includes Early Name Reservation, use the October 27-November 3 window. After launch, pay attention to Legacy progression from the early levels, explore Azeroth and work dungeons and tradeskills naturally into your journey.
World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026. Its beta, which began September 17, remains available through October 21 for eligible players.
