Everyone remembers the first character they pushed to level 60 in World of Warcraft, and almost nobody remembers the price: dozens of hours, a mountain of quests and at least one time you wandered into a zone that was far too high for you because nobody warned you. In WoW Forever, which launches November 4, the road to level 60 gains new zones, new dungeons and an experience rule that changes how you climb. This guide lays out the whole route, level by level, so you do not waste time.

Blizzard says it did not touch the experience curve. Even so, the game rewards players who level in the open world and punishes anyone who tries to farm the same dungeon over and over. It is worth understanding that before you create your character.

The level ranges below come from guides and maps published during the beta, which is still capped at level 30. The 30 to 60 stretch can change before launch, so treat it as a safe roadmap rather than a rule.

What changes about leveling in WoW Forever

Before the route, four things that change how you level:

  • The XP curve is the same as Classic. According to Blizzard, reaching level 20 takes an average of 20.5 hours in Forever, against 20.4 hours in Classic. The basic pace is practically identical.
  • Dungeons give little XP per monster and a lot of XP per quest. Killing mobs inside pays far less than before, but dungeon quests pay generously, especially on the first run. The goal is to end the habit of repeating one dungeon to level up.
  • There are more than a thousand new quests, spread across old zones and new ones. That adds variety, but also a greater chance of leaving the route you memorized in Classic.
  • The level cap is still 60. The world was stretched sideways, not upward.

Levels 1 to 10: your race's starting zone

Every character starts in their own race's zone, and there is not much to reinvent here. On the Alliance, humans level in Elwynn Forest, dwarves and gnomes in Dun Morogh and night elves in Teldrassil. On the Horde, orcs and trolls start in Durotar, tauren in Mulgore and undead in Tirisfal Glades. These zones run up to level 10, with Teldrassil stretching a little further for night elves.

The new race, the Skyborne, has its own zone: Zephras Isle, a floating island inspired by Skywall that covers levels 1 to 12. If you play a Skyborne, that is the only exception, because the rest of the road follows your faction's route.

Alliance route, levels 10 to 30

The routes below follow the Mobalytics guide and show the safest path for each race. The numbers are character levels, and "or" means any of the zones listed works.

  • Human: 1 to 10 in Elwynn Forest, 10 to 15 in Westfall or Loch Modan, 15 to 18 in Redridge Mountains or Darkshore, 18 to 22 in Duskwood or Redridge, 22 to 25 in Duskwood, Wetlands or Stonetalon Mountains, 25 to 30 in Duskwood, Wetlands or Ashenvale.
  • Dwarf and gnome: the same path as the human, swapping Elwynn Forest for Dun Morogh for levels 1 to 10.
  • Night elf: 1 to 11 in Teldrassil, 11 to 19 in Darkshore or Westfall and Loch Modan, 19 to 22 in Ashenvale, Duskwood or Redridge, 22 to 25 in Stonetalon Mountains, Duskwood or Wetlands, 25 to 30 in Ashenvale, Stonetalon, Wetlands or Redridge.
  • Alliance Skyborne: 1 to 12 in Zephras Isle, 12 to 17 in Westfall or Loch Modan, 17 to 20 in Redridge or Darkshore, 20 to 25 in Duskwood, Wetlands or Stonetalon, 25 to 30 in Duskwood, Ashenvale, Wetlands or Redridge.

Horde route, levels 10 to 30

The Horde has fewer zones, so the result is a more direct path, with The Barrens as the central hub.

  • Orc and troll: 1 to 10 in Durotar, 10 to 18 in The Barrens or Silverpine Forest, 18 to 22 in Stonetalon Mountains or The Barrens, 22 to 25 in The Barrens, Ashenvale or Hillsbrad Foothills, 25 to 30 in Ashenvale, Thousand Needles or Hillsbrad Foothills.
  • Tauren: the same path, starting in Mulgore for levels 1 to 10.
  • Undead: 1 to 10 in Tirisfal Glades, 10 to 15 in Silverpine Forest or The Barrens, 15 to 22 in The Barrens or Stonetalon Mountains, 22 to 25 in Hillsbrad Foothills, The Barrens or Ashenvale, 25 to 30 in Hillsbrad Foothills, Ashenvale or Thousand Needles.
  • Horde Skyborne: 1 to 12 in Zephras Isle, 12 to 15 in The Barrens or Silverpine Forest, and from there the same path as the orcs.

Levels 30 to 60: zones by level range

Past level 30, both factions meet in the same zones. The list below shows where each range pays off most, with the new zones called out.

  • 30 to 40: Desolace or Arathi Highlands. Stranglethorn Vale (30 to 45) also starts here.
  • 35 to 45: Riverglades (new), Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows.
  • 40 to 50: Tanaris, Feralas and The Hinterlands.
  • 43 to 55: Searing Gorge, Blasted Lands and Azshara.
  • 48 to 55: Un'Goro Crater and Felwood.
  • 50 to 60: Burning Steppes, Western Plaguelands, Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring and Silithus.
  • Level 60: Mount Hyjal (new), the endgame zone for anyone who just reached the top.

One important detail: the world of Forever does not scale monster levels to yours. If a zone is too high for you, it stays too high, and you have to go back to the route.

The four new zones, one by one

The new zones are the biggest reason to level through Forever instead of replaying Classic, so it is worth knowing each one.

Zephras Isle (levels 1 to 12)

This is the Skyborne starting zone, a floating island ruled by air elementals. The Skyborne came out of a pact between Highborne refugees and the elementals, and the zone shows a place in crisis, with failing structures and isolated communities. It is the first new content a Skyborne sees, and it ends around level 12.

Riverglades (levels 35 to 45)

It sits on the east coast of the Eastern Kingdoms, between Redridge Mountains, Swamp of Sorrows and Badlands, and it is the main novelty of the 35 to 45 stretch. Blizzard talks about more than 150 quests, a zone full of PvP encounters, a neutral goblin port and Krol'dok Stronghold, an outdoor ogre dungeon. It serves both factions and sits in the same bracket as Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows.

Shen'dralas (no official level range yet)

It is hidden between Mulgore and Desolace and continues the story of the Gelkis and Magram centaurs. It also ties to Dire Maul and Prince Tortheldrin, with quests that lead to Razorfen Downs and Maraudon. Guides have not published a confirmed level range, and in the beta you can already visit the zone by crossing Desolace, but the full content needs a higher level than the current cap.

Mount Hyjal (level 60)

This is the endgame zone, reached from Darkwhisper Gorge, and it tells what happened after Archimonde's defeat. It has several questlines, reputations to grind and content to play solo or in a group. Two raids sit there, Hyjal Summit and Barrow Deeps, and Blizzard's roadmap puts the raid unlock on December 9.

Dungeons at the right level

Since XP per monster dropped inside dungeons, the Forever rule is simple: go in once, do the quests inside, grab the gear and head back to the open world. The list below shows the nine new dungeons and the level ranges listed by Mobalytics.

  • Hall of Thanes: levels 13 to 18, in Ironforge.
  • Ruins of Lordaeron: levels 15 to 20, in Tirisfal Glades.
  • Excavation Site: levels 24 to 29, in Wetlands. Already available in the beta.
  • City of Dalaran: levels 28 to 33, in Alterac Mountains.
  • The Drowned City: levels 35 to 40, in Stranglethorn Vale.
  • Krol'dok: levels 40 to 45, in Riverglades.
  • Alcaz Prison: levels 48 to 53, in Dustwallow Marsh.
  • Blackmaw Hold: levels 55 to 60, in Azshara.
  • Shaper's Terrace: levels 58 to 60, in Un'Goro Crater.

The classic dungeons are still in the game, like the Deadmines, Wailing Caverns, Scarlet Monastery and Blackrock Depths, and the Legacy System awards points for clearing the final bosses of each bracket. See our story on the Legacy System, its 65 challenges and rewards.

Tips to level faster

No magic trick here, just habits that save hours.

  • Do the dungeon quests on your first run. Since they give a lot of XP, the first visit is the best part of the investment.
  • Prioritize the open world. If you are thinking about repeating a dungeon, Blizzard suggests heading to Shen'dralas, Riverglades or Hyjal instead.
  • Use rested XP. In the Adventure tree of the Legacy System there is a Well Rested perk that increases rested XP gains and storage, according to Icy Veins. At launch each character can spend at most 16 Legacy Points.
  • Level your professions alongside your character. The Legacy System awards points for reaching skill 150, 225 and 300 in non-gathering primary professions.
  • Plan with your group first. Pick the same ruleset and faction as your friends, or you will not be able to play together. If you have not decided, read our guide on which ruleset to pick.
  • Think about your mount. Community guides say the first ground mount stays at level 40. There are no flying mounts in Forever, so plan your trips around flight paths, boats and zeppelins.

How long does it take to reach level 60?

Blizzard has only shared numbers up to level 20, at 20.5 hours on average. For level 60 it has not published a time, and community estimates sit around 150 hours for a focused player. In practice it depends on class, group and how much you explore, so use that number as a reference only.

If you reach level 60 before raids open on December 9, Mount Hyjal serves as your first endgame goal. And if you are still deciding how to start, read our WoW Forever beginner guide and check the launch time by region.

Our take

The most interesting thing about Forever is that it does not try to be faster than Classic, but more varied. The XP curve is the same, and what changes is the reward for leaving the memorized route and going after the new zones. The dungeon XP change is the boldest decision: it should empty out leveling dungeons, and we will see whether that makes the open world livelier, as Blizzard wants, or hurts group finding.

Our recommendation for anyone starting on the 4th: follow your race's route to 30, enter each new dungeon once, and use Riverglades as your main alternative between levels 35 and 45. Leave the decision to repeat a dungeon for when you need a specific piece of gear.

The information was checked on October 6, 2026, with the beta still capped at level 30. Blizzard may adjust zones and ranges before launch.
