New to Battlefield 6? Start with the Support or Assault class, play Breakthrough or Conquest in the Initiation playlists until Rank 10, and always play the objective instead of chasing kills. That simple plan covers the steepest part of the learning curve in a shooter built around four classes, huge maps, vehicles and destruction.
This Battlefield 6 beginner's guide explains what each class does, which modes to try first, how squads and revives work, which settings to change and the most common rookie mistakes. Class, mode and edition details were checked against EA's official pages in October 2026.

What is Battlefield 6 and how can you play it?
Battlefield 6 launched on October 10, 2025, on PC (EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. EA lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 MSRP and the Phantom Edition at $99.99, though store prices change often with sales. It also joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 13, 2026.
If you just want to try the series, Battlefield REDSEC is free to play on the same platforms and includes Battle Royale and Portal. According to EA, your progress, unlocks and settings carry over if you later buy the full game. You need an EA Account and a constant internet connection either way.
Battlefield 6 classes explained: which one to pick
Every class has a signature weapon, a signature gadget and a signature trait, and you can add a Training Path for extra abilities and passive bonuses. Here is the short version, based on EA's official class guide.
Assault
The frontline attacker. Signature weapon: assault rifle. Signature gadget: the Adrenaline Injector, which boosts sprint speed, reduces explosive damage and helps you hear footsteps. Its trait, Mission Focused, makes nearby squadmates capture objectives faster, and Assault can carry the Squad Beacon, a mobile spawn point.
Engineer
The vehicle specialist. Signature weapon: SMG. Signature gadget: the Repair Tool, and Engineer is the only class that can repair friendly vehicles. Mines and rocket launchers handle tanks and aircraft, and the Mechanized Infantry trait cuts explosive damage near friendly vehicles.
Support
The squad's medic and supplier. Signature weapon: LMG, with no sprint speed penalty. Signature gadget: the Supply Bag, which restocks ammo and gadgets and helps teammates regenerate health. Support can revive any ally, the Defibrillator makes revives faster, and the Field Sustainment trait hands out health packs.
Recon
The scout and sniper. Signature weapon: sniper rifle. Signature gadget: the Motion Sensor, which reveals nearby moving enemies, vehicles and gadgets. With the Auto-spot trait, aiming down sights at enemies marks them for your team.
Best class for beginners: Support. Reviving and resupplying earn XP even while your aim is still rough, and every squad needs it. Assault comes next because it rewards simply pushing objectives. Recon is the hardest to play well, since sitting far back rarely helps the team win.

Battlefield 6 game modes: where to start
Conquest is the classic: two teams fight over multiple control points across a big map with vehicles. In Breakthrough, attackers with limited lives capture sectors one at a time while defenders hold. Rush is about arming and defending M-COM stations. Escalation, Domination and King of the Hill are tighter objective modes, while Team Deathmatch and Squad Deathmatch are pure infantry fights. Portal is the sandbox for community and custom experiences.
Until Rank 10 you can also join Initiation playlists, which mirror regular modes but match low-rank players and partly fill teams with bots. They are the best place to learn the maps without getting crushed. Keep in mind that stats are not tracked in Casual or Portal modes that use AI backfill.
Squads, revives and spawning
Squads have four players. When you go down, a squadmate can revive you and you return with reduced health instead of respawning; allies can even drag you to cover first, though nobody can revive while prone. Spawning on a squadmate or a Squad Beacon gets you back into the fight much faster than spawning at your base.

Settings to change first
EA's new player guide suggests tuning sensitivity, inverted look (globally or per vehicle), controller layout or keybinds, motion blur and camera shake, and field of view. A higher FOV is not always better; it depends on your screen and how far you sit from it. Test every change in the Firing Range, which you can open from the main menu or the loadout editor.
Common beginner mistakes
- Chasing kills instead of objectives: objective play earns more XP than eliminations alone, except in the deathmatch modes.
- Running across open ground: move between cover, check corners and flank.
- Using the wrong weapon for the range: match your gun to the distance you are fighting at.
- Facing tanks head-on: they usually win barrel-to-barrel fights against infantry, so hit them from the sides or rear.
- Ignoring your squad: spawn on them, revive them and stay close.
- Staying in a losing streak: switching modes is an easy way to reset.
