For a release of this scale, downloading in advance can help avoid spending launch day waiting for game files to install. The confirmed preload window applies to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

When does GTA 6 preload start?

Preload starts at 12:00 AM local time on November 12, 2026. The precise moment may differ by region because it follows the local time attached to your PlayStation Network or Xbox account.

Rockstar has not announced the final download size yet. Before preload day, make sure your console has sufficient SSD space and that automatic updates are enabled.

How to preload GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox

  1. Pre-order GTA 6 through the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store on the account you will use to play.
  2. Starting on November 12, open your console library or the game’s store page.
  3. Choose the download or preload option once it becomes available.
  4. Keep the console online and leave enough storage space for the full download.
  5. Check for a day-one update before launching the game on release day.

Preloading installs the game files in advance, but it does not provide early access. The game is still scheduled to unlock on November 19, 2026.

What about the physical version?

The physical edition does not include a disc. Instead, the box contains a download code that can be redeemed for the digital download and preload. Rockstar says physical code-in-box versions will be available from November 12 to support the preload window.

Before purchasing, confirm that the code’s region matches your platform account. Rockstar recommends buying the version for the same country or region as your account to avoid activation issues.
