Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has had the biggest PC launch in the history of the series. During its first weekend on sale, Bandai Namco's flight combat game peaked at more than 48,000 concurrent players on Steam, according to Steam Charts, more than three times the record set by Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

The surge comes with strong critical support. The game holds an 87 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, putting it among the best-reviewed releases of 2026, while early PC players have flagged performance problems that keep its Steam user rating below the critics' consensus.

Ace Combat 8 Steam player count: the numbers

Steam Charts currently lists an all-time peak of 48,550 concurrent players, with more than 45,000 people still flying at the time of writing. For comparison, Ace Combat 7 topped out at 13,758 concurrent players on Steam, and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon peaked at 3,795 on PC in 2013, according to figures compiled by Notebookcheck.

Some trackers captured slightly higher peaks over the weekend, so the exact figure may move as data is consolidated. Either way, the gap is large: the series has never had this many people playing at once on PC. These numbers cover Steam only and do not include PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S players, which Bandai Namco has not disclosed.

Release date, platforms and editions

According to Bandai Namco's official Ace Combat 8 page, the game launched on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam (the Steam page shows October 1 in some time zones). It was developed by Bandai Namco Aces, the studio known as Project Aces.

There are four versions. The Standard Edition includes the F-14A as a pre-order bonus. The Deluxe Edition adds three days of early access, which opened on September 29, plus a Premium ACE Pass Plus voucher and cosmetic items. The Joker Flight Pack bundles the Deluxe content with vinyl records, an artbook, a mousepad and a patch, and the Premium Joker Flight Pack adds an LED mousepad on top.

What Ace Combat 8 is about

The story is set in July 2029, after the Republic of Sotoa invades the Federation of Central Usea. You play a pilot pulled from the sea and taken aboard the aging carrier Endurance, where command hands you the callsign Wings of Theve, the name of a legendary ace, to lift the morale of a battered force. From there, you fly alongside three squadmates to take your homeland back.

Bandai Namco highlights layered, dynamic cloudscapes, first-person cinematics that develop the pilot characters and bonding moments with the squad between missions. On the multiplayer side, Ace Combat Online brings an air base lobby, co-op missions, PvP modes and cross-platform play, which the publisher calls the most extensive online offering in the franchise's history.

Ace Combat 8 reviews: critics vs. Steam players

Critics are close to unanimous. OpenCritic shows an 87 Top Critic Average from 77 reviews, a Mighty rating and a 99% recommendation rate. Reviewers praise the mission design, the sense of speed in combat and how approachable the game is for newcomers while still rewarding veterans. PC Gamer described it as the series' arcade formula refined to its peak.

Steam users are more divided. Notebookcheck reported a Mostly Positive rating of around 74% over the weekend, with complaints focused on frame rate and optimization on PC. Some players were also confused by a pre-order bonus that requires Wings of Theve to be installed before it can be used. Opinions on the multiplayer modes are mixed so far.

Why this launch matters for the series

Ace Combat has sold more than 21 million copies across the franchise, and Bandai Namco has announced that Ace Combat 7 alone passed 7 million units worldwide over the years after its 2019 launch. A first weekend at this scale on PC suggests the new entry is reaching well beyond the core audience, helped by strong word of mouth and a campaign critics consider an ideal starting point.

It also stands out in a crowded first week of October, which included Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered and several other Japanese releases competing for players' time.

Is Ace Combat 8 worth it?

On console, the critical consensus makes it an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys arcade flight action. On PC, it is worth checking recent Steam reviews first: if performance is a concern on your hardware, waiting for the first patches is the safer move. Bandai Namco has not yet detailed a post-launch roadmap, and we will update this story when it does.
