RELATED GAMECyberpunk 2077View coverage → A live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie is in development at Paramount Pictures, with Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing alongside CD Projekt Red. The project was first reported by Deadline on October 8, and CD Projekt Red's joint CEO publicly welcomed Paramount as a partner hours later.
It is the biggest step yet in taking Night City beyond games and anime, and it comes at a busy moment for the franchise: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20, and a sequel to the game is in development.

What was announced about the Cyberpunk 2077 movie
According to the report, Paramount is developing a feature film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Di Bonaventura, whose credits include the live-action Transformers and G.I. Joe films, is attached as producer, and CD Projekt Red is co-producing.
Late on Thursday, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed the news on X, calling Paramount a "future partner" that "shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise" and saying the company will share more details "at the appropriate time." CD Projekt told Reuters it had nothing to add beyond that post. Paramount had not commented publicly at the time of writing.
The market noticed: Reuters reported that CD Projekt shares rose about 3% in early trading on Friday in Warsaw.
What we don't know yet
This is an early-stage project. There is no director, screenwriter, cast, plot or release date. It is also not confirmed whether the film will adapt V's story from the game or tell a new tale in the same setting, so treat any casting or story claims you see online as speculation until CD Projekt or Paramount confirm them.

It is also unclear how the film relates to the live-action Cyberpunk project CD Projekt announced with Anonymous Content in 2023, which the company later described as still being in a conceptual phase. Neither company has said whether the two are connected.
Why Paramount and why now
Paramount is no stranger to game adaptations, having turned Sonic the Hedgehog into a successful film series. For CD Projekt, the move fits a strategy of expanding its two big universes beyond games. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime made with Studio Trigger, was a major hit in 2022 and helped push the game back up the charts.
The game itself has come a long way since its troubled December 2020 launch. CD Projekt says Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies, and the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million. The studio is also expanding the game's reach: the Ultimate Edition reached Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac in 2025, a PS5 Pro update arrived in April 2026, and a Battle.net release was announced at BlizzCon in September.

Edgerunners 2 and the Cyberpunk sequel
Before any movie arrives, fans have more Cyberpunk to watch. According to CD Projekt Red's official announcement, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a standalone 10-episode series from Studio Trigger, made with CD Projekt Red, that premieres exclusively on Netflix on October 20. It follows a new cast of characters in Night City.
On the game side, Reuters reports that 184 developers were working on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel as of July 31. It has no release date.
What this means for players
Nothing changes in the game right now, but a film usually brings a wave of new players back to the source material. If you never played Cyberpunk 2077, or quit after its launch, this is a good moment to see where it stands; our guide on whether Cyberpunk 2077 is worth playing in 2026 covers platforms, Phantom Liberty and PC requirements.
CD Projekt's other franchise is also back in the spotlight: The Witcher 3 Remastered launched in September with a free upgrade for existing owners.

We will update this story when Paramount or CD Projekt Red share a director, cast or release window.
