BlizzCon 2026 may be over, but Blizzard is still revealing new details about the future of one of its biggest franchises.

In a special episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, recorded at BlizzCon and released on September 15, members of the Diablo development team discussed Diablo V, Diablo IV’s new Season of Hell’s Legacy, the return of the Amazon, and the upcoming Diablo animated series being developed with Netflix.

The conversation also offered more insight into the philosophy behind Diablo V.

This time, players will not enter Sanctuary hoping to prevent the Lord of Terror from winning.

Diablo has already won.

Diablo V Begins After Sanctuary Has Already Lost

The central premise of Diablo V represents a major shift for the franchise.

Rather than placing players in another race to prevent Sanctuary's destruction, the next game begins after that battle has already been lost.

Blizzard has confirmed that Sanctuary has fallen, its heroes have been defeated and Diablo has won. Diablo V is officially in development and is currently targeting Spring 2029.

During the Xbox discussion, Tiffany Wat explained how that premise allows the team to explore an even darker version of the Diablo universe.

Humanity has already suffered a catastrophic defeat. Survivors are scarce, hope is harder to find, and Sanctuary is being designed around the consequences of Diablo's victory.

Blizzard Wants to Push Diablo V's Campaign Further

One of the more revealing parts of the discussion concerned Blizzard's ambitions for Diablo V's campaign.

Matt Zimmerman discussed the team's desire to build on what worked in Diablo IV while pushing the next campaign further.

Diablo IV established a foundation through its cinematic storytelling, characters such as Lilith and a story that gradually placed the player at the center of Sanctuary's conflict. The developers now have an opportunity to expand those ideas within Diablo V's fallen world.

But the goal is not simply to make a larger version of Diablo IV.

The developers are considering the different types of players the franchise has accumulated over three decades — from those primarily invested in Sanctuary's story and atmosphere to players focused on character builds, loot, theorycrafting and social experiences.

That audience has become enormous: Blizzard says more than 130 million players have experienced Diablo over the franchise's history.

A Darker Sanctuary

Diablo V's artistic direction follows its narrative premise.

The developers want to explore what Sanctuary looks like when Hell is no longer merely threatening humanity but has effectively broken through.

That gives Blizzard an opportunity to create locations transformed by demonic influence and show the consequences of Diablo's victory through the environment itself.

It's a fundamental difference from previous games.

Before, the mission was to prevent the end.

In Diablo V, players will have to discover how to survive after it.

The Diablo Netflix Series Remains Mysterious

The conversation also touched briefly on the Diablo animated series currently in development at Netflix.

Blizzard still isn't revealing its story, characters or release window. The project was officially announced at BlizzCon 2026 as an animated series set within the world of Diablo.

For now, it is another part of Blizzard's broader attempt to expand Sanctuary beyond the games, but it is too early to determine how — or whether — the series will directly connect to Diablo IV or Diablo V.

Diablo IV Isn't Going Away While Diablo V Is Developed

The second half of the podcast shifted the focus back to Diablo IV.

And Blizzard's message is important: announcing Diablo V does not mean the current game is being abandoned.

Season 15 — Season of Hell's Legacy is part of Diablo's 30th anniversary celebration and was created around the franchise's history.

Deckard Cain Returns in Season of Hell's Legacy

The new season turns Diablo's history into part of its progression.

Deckard Cain returns to guide players through a journey involving three Dark Wanderers connected to the Prime Evils.

Players must defeat and redeem them, eventually obtaining Splinters of Evil, fragments that draw upon the powers of Diablo's greatest enemies.

Each Splinter allows the player to tap into power associated with a Prime Evil.

One example discussed during the podcast is the Splinter of Destruction, connected to Baal. As players develop the Splinter, its abilities can gain additional effects.

But the system isn't limited to character power.

The developers explained that it can also interact with endgame activities through War Plans, allowing the selected power to affect the structure of certain activities.

Diablo, Baal and Mephisto Return

Season of Hell's Legacy brings the three Prime Evils back into focus:

Diablo. Baal. Mephisto.

The season is designed as a playable celebration of Diablo's history, drawing from characters, enemies, locations and other elements associated with different eras of the franchise.

And Blizzard is hiding at least one more surprise.

Mephisto appeared as part of the BlizzCon experience, but the developers indicated during the podcast that players haven't seen the last of him.

Their hint was simple: explore Skovos.

Something involving Mephisto is waiting to be discovered there during Season of Hell's Legacy.

The Amazon Returns to Diablo IV in 2027

The final major topic was one of Diablo IV's biggest upcoming additions: the Amazon.

The class is scheduled to arrive during the first half of 2027, bringing one of Diablo II's most recognizable class fantasies into Diablo IV.

However, Blizzard isn't simply recreating the old class.

The new Amazon is being developed around multiple combat archetypes and a broader interpretation of what an Amazon warrior can be.

The Amazon returns to Diablo IV in 2027 with ranged, melee and command-oriented combat possibilities.

From Bows to Close-Range Combat

The classic ranged identity remains part of the class.

The Amazon can fight from long distances using a bow, while the returning javelin opens up a different style of combat.

The developers explained that the javelin is intended to give the Amazon considerable versatility, allowing players to move between ranged, mid-range and melee engagements.

One archetype currently being explored is the Skirmisher, built around moving into combat, striking enemies and quickly repositioning.

Another direction shown by Blizzard involves sword-and-shield combat, expanding the Amazon into territory that goes beyond the traditional ranged fantasy.

The goal is still to preserve the identity of the Amazon as a disciplined soldier — lethal, controlled and precise rather than simply another heavily armored melee fighter.

The Amazon's Fantasy Is Getting Bigger

Blizzard is also exploring the Amazon's connection to other warriors from her culture.

That opens the door to combat built around fighting alongside other Amazon warriors rather than treating the class solely as an individual archer or javelin fighter.

It represents a substantial expansion of the fantasy established by Diablo II while still preserving familiar weapons and abilities.

The javelin itself will become a new weapon type in Diablo IV when the Amazon arrives.

Veteran players should recognize some of the ideas Blizzard is experimenting with as well, including lightning-focused javelin gameplay inspired by one of the class's most iconic playstyles.

Diablo Is Entering a New Era

The Official Xbox Podcast highlights just how unusual the current moment is for Diablo.

On one side, Diablo IV continues to expand, with Season of Hell's Legacy celebrating three decades of the franchise and the Amazon preparing to join the game in 2027.

On the other, Blizzard is already building Diablo V for 2029, centered on a version of Sanctuary where the battle against Diablo has already been lost.

An animated Netflix series is also in development, extending Diablo beyond games.

The most interesting part may be the coexistence of these different eras.

Diablo IV continues building the franchise's present while Diablo V begins defining its future.

And if the developers' current vision survives the long road to release, the defining question of the next Diablo won't simply be how to defeat Diablo.

It will be discovering what remains after he wins.
