The game is developed by Square Enix with Lancarse, according to its Steam page. It is single-player only, and the PlayStation Store lists it with an ESRB rating of Everyone 10+.

Price, editions and pre-order bonus

On the US PlayStation Store and Steam, the Standard Edition costs $49.99, and the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $59.99. The options are:

  • Standard Edition: the base game.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition: the base game plus a pack of useful in-game items.
  • Collector's Edition: the game plus physical extras, including an artbook, a soundtrack and a promo card for the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game.

Pre-orders include the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack: a Magitek Airship Passkey that changes your airship's look, the Knight's Greatsword, the Chestplate of Preparation (which boosts battle EXP), a Magicite Shard, three Tents and three Mist Potions. The items are collected from the postbox in front of the inn in the Town of Mitra once you progress far enough. A free demo is also listed on the PlayStation Store.

What kind of game it is

Resonance is a tale of Crystals based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the 2015 mobile game, but Square Enix says it was substantially rebuilt as a console RPG. Combat is turn-based with what the publisher calls a modern twist, and series staples such as chocobos, espers and airships return.

The big hook is Visions: echoes of famous Final Fantasy characters who join your battles. Square Enix has confirmed Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. Side content includes Gilgamesh, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

Famitsu review score and how long it takes to beat

Famitsu's four reviewers each gave it a 9, for a total of 36/40. Based on Famitsu's figures, as reported by Push Square and Pure Xbox, the main story takes about 20 to 30 hours, and seeing everything takes around 70 hours.

That is one review, so wait for the Western scores, which should appear close to launch, before you treat it as a verdict. Still, a 36 from Famitsu is a strong start for a release that sits outside the numbered series.

Should you buy it at launch?

If you enjoyed Octopath Traveler or the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Resonance is aimed squarely at you, and the $49.99 price is lower than most new RPGs. If you are unsure, the free demo is the safest test. The Deluxe Edition only adds items, so the Standard Edition is enough for most players.
