The game is published by Lyrical Games and developed by One More Level. On the official Steam page, it is described as a first-person action soulslike in which you rise from death as a former soldier of Napoleon's army, wield supernatural powers and fight monsters tied to a conspiracy that threatens humanity.

Valor Mortis price and editions

The PlayStation Store listing confirms two editions:

Standard Edition: $39.99. The base game.

Deluxe Edition: $59.99. According to the publisher, it adds a major story DLC planned for next year, plus cosmetic packs released before that.

PS Plus Premium members on PS5 can also try a 1.5-hour game trial. On Steam, owners of games such as Ghostrunner, Ghostrunner 2 and Dishonored get a 10% discount through bundle pricing. A free New Game+ mode that keeps your gear and progression is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Valor Mortis reviews: what critics are saying

Reviews went live on October 12. At that point, Metacritic showed 77 for the PC version and 83 for the PS5 version, while OpenCritic averaged around 80 across more than 50 critics. Few Xbox reviews were published at launch, and several reviewers said Xbox codes arrived late.

The highest scores include 9/10 from GamingBolt and Destructoid, 8.5/10 from DualShockers and 8/10 from Push Square and Shacknews. IGN gave it 7/10, calling it a novel soulslike packed with interesting ideas, while GameSpot and GamesRadar+ were less impressed, with a 6/10 and 3/5. The common praise points to the setting, the mix of melee and supernatural abilities and the strong voice cast, led by Vincent Cassel as Napoleon Bonaparte.

PC performance and requirements

The main warning is about the PC version. IGN, GamesRadar+ and Wccftech reported crashes, shader stutter and frame rate swings in pre-release PC builds. GamesRadar+ said it was told a launch-day patch would address many of these issues, but One More Level and Lyrical Games had not published patch notes when reviews went live. If you play on PC, check the game's Steam news feed for updates before a long session.

The requirements listed on Steam, which the studio says may still change, are:

Minimum: Windows 11, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-11700, Radeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 2070 Super, 16 GB of RAM and 50 GB of storage.

Recommended: Windows 11, AMD Ryzen 7 7700 or Intel Core i7-13700, Radeon RX 7900 GRE or GeForce RTX 4070, 16 GB of RAM and 50 GB of storage.

An SSD is required in both cases. Not sure where your PC lands? Our guide on how to read system requirements walks you through it.

What Valor Mortis means for players

For soulslike fans, Valor Mortis is one of the cheapest new entries in the genre this year, and Game Pass makes it even easier to try. The safest choice depends on your platform. On PS5, it currently has the best review average. On Xbox and PC, Game Pass lets you test it without buying, which is useful while PC patches roll out.

The Steam page also lists Brazilian Portuguese interface and subtitles, which matters for players in Brazil.

What comes next

The next confirmed milestones are New Game+ in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the major story DLC included in the Deluxe Edition, planned for next year. Expect performance patches first, especially on PC. Game Pass also had a big October: see how Battlefield 6 joined the service. If Valor Mortis makes you want more of the genre, our list of the best soulslike games is a good next stop.
