Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will let you play on Hard Mode from the very start. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed it in an interview with Hardcore Gamer at Tokyo Game Show 2026, ending a rule that held through the whole Remake trilogy so far: in Remake and Rebirth, Hard only unlocked after you finished the story.

Hamaguchi also made clear that this is not the same Hard Mode fans know. Here is what he said, how the new difficulty options work and what it means before the April 8, 2027 launch.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Hard Mode: what Hamaguchi confirmed

According to the interview, as reported by GamesRadar+ and other outlets, Hamaguchi said Hard Mode is selectable from the beginning of the game, but that it "won't function in the exact same way" as it did in Remake and Rebirth. The team has reworked the high-difficulty experience to fit Revelation's new design.

The reason is the size of the player's toolkit. In the earlier games, Hard Mode raised the challenge mainly by limiting resources, most notably by blocking items. Hamaguchi explained that the options available to players in Revelation have grown so much that simply banning items would no longer produce the kind of challenge the team wanted, so the mode was rebuilt instead.

That also settles an earlier question. In September, some reports based on unnamed sources claimed Revelation would launch without a Hard Mode. The director's comments confirm that a Hard Mode does exist and is there from day one.

Enemy Strength: Dynamic mode or static enemies

Revelation's difficulty settings also include a new Enemy Strength option. It lets you choose between the returning Dynamic mode, which adjusts encounters to your party's progression so fights stay challenging, and static enemies that keep fixed levels.

In practice, this gives two separate dials: the difficulty mode itself and how enemies scale. Players who like to over-level and steamroll can stick with static enemies, while those who want every region to stay tense can switch on Dynamic mode.

Endgame content, level 99 and optional WEAPONs

Hamaguchi said Revelation offers a wide variety of endgame content after you beat the game, and more challenges unlock once the main story is done. In Remake and Rebirth, replaying on Hard was a big part of the post-game; this time the focus moves to the world map.

That fits what he told Italian outlet Everything.it in June: the level cap goes up to 99, and optional bosses such as the WEAPONs and Knights of the Round will be tougher than the story's final boss, with their own narrative content.

Release date, platforms and editions

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC at the same time, a first for the trilogy. Square Enix dated it during the September State of Play, and the official PlayStation Blog announcement details the open world, the Highwind airship, the chocobo Piko and the FITS outfits: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner.

Pre-orders are open. The Premium and Premium Plus editions include the Story Expansion Pass, with two story DLCs, and 24-hour early access starting April 7. The PlayStation Store also sells a Trilogy bundle with Remake Intergrade, Rebirth and Revelation.

What this means for players

For veterans of Remake and Rebirth, this is the most player-friendly change so far: no second playthrough just to unlock the real challenge. The open question is how the reworked Hard Mode actually restricts the player if item bans are no longer the main lever, and Square Enix has not detailed that yet.
